We often rush through our days, reacting to everything around us without stopping to consider what really matters. Feeling a sense of overwhelm with life’s demands and looking at all the things I could do in my business took my mind back to a sermon I’d heard from Francis Chan. He was preaching out of 2 Timothy and prefaced that sermon by drawing us back to the context of the writing. Paul wrote that letter from a dungeon knowing his life was nearing its end.
Surely any of us, under those circumstances, would have sensed the weight of how we use those final moments – thinking more in a frame of mind saying “if there’s anything I need you to know, it’s this…”
This had made me reflecting on how we’re living life now. We tend to be so reactive that we don’t take the time to clarify our own life messages. God gives us numerous messages to share over our lifetimes, but what is the overarching message He is communicating through your life?
As 2024 began, I sensed my word for the year was “purpose.” Over the past months, I’ve felt a deep need to step back and gain clarity. Clarity is crucial. A lack of clarity leads to insecurity, which can cause us to stumble and become incredibly self-destructive, sabotaging our own lives, relationships, and about anything else you can name. When we operate out of insecurity, we can become reactive and chaotic, rather than focused and effective.
So, how do we gain clarity?
By stepping back and allowing God to help us see our purpose. This clarity enables us to spend our time wisely, leading a life we’re proud of and avoiding so many of the distractions that derail us. Many things demand our immediate attention, but that’s where clarity can make way for discernment to help us distinguish between the urgent and the truly important.
Sometimes, we get caught up in other people’s drama or things people turn into these “pressing” issues that consume our time and energy, leaving us no room for what really matters. These things can be a time-suck that gets us off course. My question then is, how do you separate the moments where you truly need to be there for people and when you need to have the wisdom to stay on track, not getting caught up in every little thing that would seek to pull you away from your greater calling.
Consider how much of our pursuits end up as meaningless clutter. What do we sacrifice for things that won’t last? It’s not wrong to have possessions, but we need to examine the purpose and passion behind our pursuits. A life yielded to God, redeemed by Him, is incomparable to anything the world offers.
My challenge for you today is this: to take a step back and seek real clarity. Grab a pen and paper. Slip off to a quiet place. Let God clarify your vision and purpose, and identify what in your life needs more attention or what you need to step away from to make room for what matters most. Your life is significant. I just don’t want you to miss realizing all you could be and all God could do through you.
Regularly take time to step back from the noise and let God clarify your vision. This will help you confidently walk into the purpose He has for you.
